Lk 7:36-8:3

  • Jesus Anointed by Mary
    • invited to dinner with a Pharisees by the name of Simon (v1,40);
    • Mary lived in the same city; she had a sinful life;
    • standing behind Jesus, she wept and her tears fell on Jesus' feet;
    • she wiped the tears with her hair; in effect washing them (v44)
    • she kissed Jesus' feet and put perfume on them;
  • Who will love more?
    • Jesus spoke to the Pharisees
      • who will love more? the one owes 500 and got canceled or 50 and canceled?
      • the former will;
    • I entered your home
      • you didn't give me water for my feet; she washed them with her tears and hair;
      • you didn't give me a kiss; she kept kissing my feet;
      • you didn't put oil on my head; she poured perfume on my feet (Jesus didn't mention it's the most expensive one);
    • Her many sins are forgiven--for she loved much
      • here's it's not clear whether her love was a result of or a reason why her sins are forgiven; but from the context it seems the former; she had faith that her sins are/will be forgiven, even before Jesus proclaimed it to her and the rest around her;
    • He who has been forgiven little loves little;
      • so which is better then? can one be forgiven little (hence less sin) and love ever more?
      • Or is it just our perception of how much is forgiven that's questionable?
      • Perhaps no one can really claim he has been forgiven little or less than any other; therefore, we all should love much? If so, why Jesus didn't make such a point, but the other instead?
  • Mary Magdalene
    • 7 demons were driven out from her;
    • Not the Mary above;
