- v1 - Jesus let by the Spirit in the desert;
- Devil's temptations
- If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread (v3)
- I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours (v6-7)
- If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here... (v9-11)
- Jesus' replies:
- It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone (Deut 8:3)' (v4)
- It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only (Deut 6:13)' (v8)
- It says: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test (Deut :16)' (v12)
- v14 - Jesus first returned to Nazareth, where he had been brought up (v16)
- but people there didn't respect him (v22);
- Jesus gave the example of:
- Elijah
- who went to the widow in Sidon but not in Israel
- Elisha
- who healed Syrian general Naaman, not none in Israel
- -> no prophet is accepted in his hometown (v24)
- the people were so furious that they wanted to throw him down the cliff (v29)
- but Jesus walked right through the crowd and left (v30)
