- theme: glory, spirit, & veil
- ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but of the Spirit
- in Paul's days, he can say that; but can we still say the same today? Is the new covenant now of the letter or of the Spirit?
- how to carry on Paul's spirit to minister the new covenant of the Spirit, not the letter?
- the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life;
- the veil has been taken away in Christ (and only in Christ)
- whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away
- the Lord is the Spirit
- wherever He is, there is freedom;

1 Cor 14:18-40
- Paul speaks in tongues, too
- and even more than all of you
- but he rather speaks intelligible words in the church
- tongues are for unbelievers (v22)
- so Paul is referring 'tongues' to 'foreign languages' or 'dialects'?
- only that would make sense?
- a good article here
- a key is verses 10 & 13: languages have meaning; and let it be interpreted;
- v28: otherwise, just quietly speak directly to God;
- think like an adult
- be infants when in regard to evil
- during worship
- when you come together
- strengthen the church
- in a fitting and orderly way (v40)
- in conclusion -> be eager to prophesy
- do not forbid speaking in tongues

1 Cor 14:1-17
- follow the way of love (v1)
- eagerly desire spiritual gifts
- probably not much one can do besides desiring
- because only God can provide
- especially the gift of prophecy
- because tongues is between one and God
- but prophecy can edify the church
- example, a trumpet needs to sound a clear call
- for everyone to understand and get ready for battle
- be fruitful with the mind (v14) as well
- so do it both ways
- with my spirit
- with my mind

1 Cor 11:3-16
- head
- God->Christ->man->woman (singular form)
- when praying or prophesying
- women should cover their head
- uncovered head is as disgraceful as shaving the head
- Paul appeals to the common sense of the reader (at their time);
- the common sense may have changed today, but the principle is still the same;

- Paul and others did not exercise their rights, so that
- the gospel of Christ not be hindered (v12)
- boast about it (v15)
- of which he'd rather died than have someone deprive him
- but not to boast when preaching the gospel
- because he was compelled to do it (woe to me if I don't preach the gospel)
- offer gospel preaching free of charge (v18)
- which is his reward
Saturday, August 11, 2007
