- Peter and several others went fishing
- for the whole night they didn't get any fish
- Jesus appeared to them and instructed them to cast the net on the right side
- they got a net-full of fish (153 large fish, to be exact, v11)
- John then recognized it was Jesus
- Peter jumped into the water at once and swam to Jesus
- Jesus cooked for them
- on a fire of burning coal there were
- fish
- some bread
- isn't this a heart-warming picture? perhaps morning had just broken, after a night of hard work, the disciples can finally sit down, warm themselves and eat breakfast with their Lord (v12);
- this was the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples
- first was Sunday night (Thomas wasn't there)
- second was 8 days later (20:26), this time Thomas was there
- the third time Jesus cooked them breakfast
- Jesus reinstated Peter
- 3 times he asked Peter, Simon son of John:
- Do you truly love me more than these?
- Yes, Lord, you know that I love you
- Feed my lambs
- do you truly love me?
- Yes, Lord, you know that I love you
- Take care of my sheep
- do you love me?
- Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you
- Feed my sheep
- Jesus indicated Peter's death
- when you are old
- you'll stretch our your hands
- someone will dress you, and
- lead you where you do not want to go
- by that Jesus also tells Peter that he had a long way ahead of him; this could be particular revealing because at the time Peter and his fellow disciples did not know what to do and what's laid ahead of them; the road is long...
- Follow me!
- Peter was curious about John, 'what about him?'
- what is that to you? (none of your business)
- you must follow me!
