Jn 21

  • Peter and several others went fishing
    • for the whole night they didn't get any fish
    • Jesus appeared to them and instructed them to cast the net on the right side
    • they got a net-full of fish (153 large fish, to be exact, v11)
    • John then recognized it was Jesus
    • Peter jumped into the water at once and swam to Jesus
    • Jesus cooked for them
      • on a fire of burning coal there were
        • fish
        • some bread
      • isn't this a heart-warming picture? perhaps morning had just broken, after a night of hard work, the disciples can finally sit down, warm themselves and eat breakfast with their Lord (v12);
  • this was the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples
    • first was Sunday night (Thomas wasn't there)
    • second was 8 days later (20:26), this time Thomas was there
    • the third time Jesus cooked them breakfast
  • Jesus reinstated Peter
    • 3 times he asked Peter, Simon son of John:
      • Do you truly love me more than these?
        • Yes, Lord, you know that I love you
          • Feed my lambs
      • do you truly love me?
        • Yes, Lord, you know that I love you
          • Take care of my sheep
      • do you love me?
        • Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you
          • Feed my sheep
    • Jesus indicated Peter's death
      • when you are old
        • you'll stretch our your hands
        • someone will dress you, and
        • lead you where you do not want to go
      • by that Jesus also tells Peter that he had a long way ahead of him; this could be particular revealing because at the time Peter and his fellow disciples did not know what to do and what's laid ahead of them; the road is long...
    • Follow me!
  • Peter was curious about John, 'what about him?'
    • what is that to you? (none of your business)
    • you must follow me!
