Jn 18:25-19:22

  • Peter's 2nd and 3rd Denials
  • to avoid ceremonial uncleanness the Jews did not enter Pilate's palace
    • so Pilate came out to them
  • the Jews did not have the right to execute anyone
    • but their intent was to have Jesus killed
  • Pilate heard Jesus
    • are you the king of the Jews
      • is that your own idea or something you heard?
    • I'm not a Jew, but your people sent you to me, what have you done?
      • my kingdom is not of this world, but from another place
    • you are a king then
      • you're right; that's why I was born and came to this world--to testify the truth
    • what is truth? (Pilate walked out, not intended for an answer)
  • Pilate offered the Jews the release of either Jesus or Barabbas
    • the crowd chose Barabbas
  • the soldiers put a crown of thorns on Jesus' head
    • they stuck him in the face
    • they put on him a purple robe
  • Pilate wanted to hear Jesus again
    • where do you come from?
    • Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?
      • the power is from above
      • the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin
  • Pilate wanted to set Jesus free, but the Jews objected
    • if you let him go, you're no friend of Caesar
    • we have no king but Caesar (the chief priests)
  • notice from Pilate
    • JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS
    • written in
      • Aramaic,
      • Latin and
      • Greek
    • the Jews asked for a modification (self claimed), but Pilate refused
