Mt 22:1-33

  • vv1-14: Parable of the wedding banquet:
    • king -> God
    • king's son -> Jesus
    • king's servants -> prophets
    • those who had been invited -> Isrealites
    • the invited people
      • ignored the king's servants
        • one went off to the field
        • another to do his business
        • the rest
          • seized the servants
          • mistreated them
          • then killed them
    • the king
      • was enraged and
      • send his army to destroy the murders and
      • burned the city
      • then asked his servants to
        • invite anyone found on the street
    • the servants
      • went out into the streets
      • gathered all the people they could find (good and bad)
    • the wedding hall was packed
    • one of the guest did not wear wedding clothes, when the king saw him he questioned him why. The man was speechless
    • the king told the attendants
      • tie him hand and foot
      • throw him outside
      • into the darkness
      • where there willbe weeping and gnashing of teeth
  • vv15-22: Paying taxes to Caesar
    • the Pharisees and the Herodians schemed to trap Jesus (vv15-16)
    • is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? (v17)
    • Jesus's reply was affirmative--give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's (v21)
    • they were amazed (v22)
  • vv23-33: Marriage at the Resurrection
    • the Sadducees -> don't believe in resurrection
    • they were wrong (v29); God is not the Godof the dead but of the living (v32)
    • the crowds were astonished (v33)
