Mk 9:30-10:12

  • vv30-32: Jesus predicted his death and resurrection; the disciples didn't understand and were afraid to ask.
  • Anyone wants to be first -> he must be the very last, and the servant of all;
  • Welcome Jesus -> welcomes God;
  • Whoever not against us is for us (v40)
    • what happened to the 'middle ground,' one might dare to ask; is this a 'false dichotomy' or a 'false dilemma'?
    • To put things in perspective:
      • Mk 9:40:
        • for whoever is not against us is for us
        • 不 敵 擋 我 們 的 , 就 是 幫 助 我 們 的 。
      • Mt 12:30:
        • He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters;
        • 不 與 我 相 合 的 , 就 是 敵 我 的 ; 不 同 我 收 聚 的 , 就 是 分 散 的 。
      • Lk 9:50:
        • for whoever is not against you is for you
        • 因 為 不 敵 擋 你 們 的 , 就 是 幫 助 你 們 的 。
      • Lk 11:23:
        • He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters.
        • 不 與 我 相 合 的 , 就 是 敵 我 的 ; 不 同 我 收 聚 的 , 就 是 分 散 的 。
    • While many things are not absolute, when it comes to truth it is 'black-and-white'; for example, the question 'is there a God?' can have only one answer--the truth can be either 'yes' or 'no' (a true dichotomy); one might say 'I don't know', but that doesn't change the fact that the true answer can be only one; truth is exclusive by nature, and it compels all serious person to find out the answer; the challenge is does one dare to try (Sapere aude);
  • 10:9 - what God has joined together, let man not separate
  • v11 - Any one who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; and same for the wife;
