Mk 6:1-29

  • Isn't he--
    • a carpenter?
    • son of Mary?
    • brother of James Joseph, Judas and Simon, and his sisters?
  • They say 'Familiarity breeds contempt' (see v3b);
  • A prophet is not regarded as one when he's home, in his own house and among his relatives (v4).
  • v5: when people don't believe him, he could not do miracles on them (Jesus probably would should they come);
  • v7: 2x2 (6 teams):
    • gave them authority over evil spirits
    • instructed them to:
      • take nothing except a staff
        • no bread
        • no bag
        • no money
      • wear sandals, but not extra tunic
      • stay at the same house in a town until you leave that town
      • leave if any place not welcome or listen to you, and shake off the dust on your feet when you leave;
  • Death of John the Baptist
    • Herodias ask her daughter to ask for John's head to Herod, whom she married to after being the wife of his brother, Philip;
    • John was buried by his disciples in a tomb;
