Mt 19:13-30

  • v14: Let the children come to God. Do not hinder them. This is the base of many children ministry. For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these (cf 18:3). They could be very little as their parents brought them to Jesus (the Bible didn't say how young the little ones were, in v1).
  • vv16-24: the rich young man. Am I envy of his worldly possessions? A little bit, I must admit.
    • I imagine it must be good to have so much fortune in his dispense (wouldn't it be nice to live well without any of the hardship of work?).
    • In a world like this and in a place like ours, it feels even more real and personal (think company stock options, and my friends and ex-colleagues who's working at Google now).
    • But I also know that rich does not mean happiness--for there are richman's troubles (wealth could be a burden at times).
    • And rich does not mean eternal life, for sure. Here the rich young man clearly sensed that, and came to Jesus for an answer (v16).
  • Jesus' reply:
    • If you want to enter life, obey the commandments:
      • Do not murder,
      • Do not commit adultery
      • Do not steal
      • Do not give false testmony
      • Honor your father and mother
      • Love your neighbor as yourself
    • If you want to be perfect, then,
      • go, sell your possessions
      • give to the poor (and you'll have treasure in heaven)
      • come, follow me
  • All those must have been too much to ask from the rich young man because he went away sad (v22). His wealth was great.
  • v23: It's hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Clearly, the road to rich does not lead to heaven also. It doesn't work that way. Jesus asked the man to come back to square one, and take a new direction. Imagine how hard that must have been! In the end, it's where hour heart belong that counts, and our heart lies where our treasure is (Mt 6:21). From Jesus' view point, worldly possession is nothing. And there are treasure in heaven for those who obey God, as well as richness of life for those who follow Jesus. Which direction would you pick?
  • v26: all things are possible with God
  • v30: many who are last will be first.
