Mt 17:10-27

  • v10: Elijah must come first (before Elisha):
    • Elijah -> Elisha;
    • John the Baptist -> Jesus (v13, 11:14).
  • v20: the reason disciples couldn't drive out the demon was that
    • they had too little faith;
    • need prayer and fasting (v21 <- note: in NIV this verse is included only as small text)
  • v20: Nothing will be impossible for you--the disciples--and faith is the key!
  • v23: Jesus predicts his death and his resurrection again (cf 16:21), but this time Peter dared not say anything. They were filled with grief (depressed?). Yet these are the disciple who spent the rest of their lives preaching the Gospel. Many of them died in foreign land far away from their hometown (Capernaum, Galilee). From here we see the transforming power from God.
  • vv26: Sons of kings get tax exemption. But Jesus didn't want to offend the tax collectors (IRS) by not paying the Temple Tax.
